Natural Foods Defined

Quality (59)

Stephanie Yeh With so galore people concerned about natural and organic foods these days, it’s useful to stop and really take a look at what “natural” and “organic” foods really are. We all know that natural and organic foods are better for us than highly processed or artificial foods, but do we really know which foods are natural and organic? When you buy food that is labeled “natural,” what does that really mean? What about “organic”? It turns out that the term “natural” doesn’t normal all that much. Because it’s only been broadly defined by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s a fairly absolute term, the meaning of which is left up to the conscience of the food manufacturer. The FDA says that some food can be labeled as natural so long as it doesn’t include added color, artificial substances or artificial flavors. This definition sounds good—until you realize that it can be stretched to include such definitely non-natural substances such as aspartame, the artificial sweetener. More neoliberal food manufacturers argue that “natural” means any material that exists in nature. While aspartame does not exist in nature (you have to use a chemical process to create it), manufacturers say that the resulting product is made up of cardinal amino acids, both of which do exist in nature. Never mind that they don’t exist glued together as aspartame! So what can the savvy nutritionally-conscious consumer do about this? Go with a term that is clearly defined and regulated by the FDA: organic. In the next issue we’ll delve into the intricacies of organic foods, including basic regulations and differing levels of organic production. In the meantime, avoid foods that are only labeled as “natural” and go for those labeled “organic” or “natural and organic.” It’s the real stuff. • You Can't Fool Mother Nature
In the 1970's, there was a margarine commercial with the message of "you can't fool mother nature." This statement never held more genuine than it does today. Up until the very embryotic 1900's, the rural and livestock in this country was grown and adorned using natural and organic methods. It was retributory the way it was done and it didn't need to be titled "organic". In the last 50 years or so, much extensive use of chemicals became widespread. Remember when a tomato actually tasted like a tomato? With the advent of chemical pesticides and herbicides for produce and steroids and antibiotics fed to livestock, is it any wonder why people are nervous about the future of our health? We are what we eat, there's no question about that. There is a saying, "garbage in, garbage out."
  • Natural Skin Care
Dr. Edward F. Group III, DC, Ph.D, ND, DACBN

You work woody to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly. You know that nonsynthetic foods can help you avoid ingesting nasty hormones and chemicals but did you know that these toxins are creeping into your system in opposite ways? Your moisturizers, eye creams, and make up may seem harmless, but check out the labels and you'll find a laundry list of tongue-twisting ingredients, many of which could be hazardous to your health. In a recent survey, conducted by Health, cardinal three percent of responding consumers indicated that they would rather use complete natural body products. The skin care industry is responding to this demand. The natural and organic skin care product sector has seen a growth of thirty cardinal percent over the last year. whatsoever of these products may claim to be all-natural, while still containing a slew of chemicals and toxins. Here's what you need to know active natural skin care and how to determine if the product you are using is liberated of harmful chemicals.

Why Choose earthy Skin Care Products?

There is approximately six pounds of skin on your body which provides a porous membrane into your system. Dirt, dust, pollutants, and other environmental pollutants enter the body through the skin, providing a more significant gateway to your system than food. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) saved that 884 chemicals used in own care products and cosmetics are celebrated to be toxic. And a new Canadian study in Pediatric Drugs saved cosmetic and own care products as the most usual cause of unwilling poisonings of kids under six.

The chemicals and toxins found in most commercial skin care products also have a detrimental effect on the environment, although this effect is just opening to be understood. In March, a team of US Geological Survey scientists showed that a variety of chemicals from personal care products were among 95 wastewater contaminants found in US waterways.

Why poison yourself and the environment with cyanogenetic chemicals and pollutants? Natural skin care products are better for you, for your skin, and for the environment. But many products may claim to be all-natural while still containing a number of calumniatory ingredients. Make doomed you read and understand the product label to ensure that the product your using is as natural as it claims to be.

    Reading the Ingredients Label

Organic personal care manufacturing needs strict standards and enforcement in order to be effective. Currently, whatsoever manufacturers claim their products are nonsynthetic merely as a marketing gimmick. cardinal look at their products ingredients clearly suggests otherwise. single by tying nonsynthetic beauty care closely to the general Organic Program standards can the “lifestyle” marketed by the manufacturers represent the values at the core of nonsynthetic agriculture.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classifies cosmetics into 13 categories, but it does not regulate them. According to the FDA, “A aesthetic manufacturer may use any ingredient or raw material and market the closing product without government approval.” Seven toxins are banned, but many more celebrated toxins and carcinogens are allowed in cosmetic formulations. little than one percent of the FDA’s budget is for the evaluation of skin care products.

Many commercialised skin care products have been regularly found to contain toxic chemicals. Surprisingly, most personal care products are not tested for health and safety. And because the FDA does not regulate skin care manufacturers, questionable ingredients often make their way into their formulas. These ingredients may seem harmless in the short-term, but their chemical components are stored in the fatty tissues of the body where they accumulate and magnify finished time.

Cosmetics and personal care products are marketed supported on the superior and content of their formulas. galore products claim to be filled with expensive vitamins, oils, and perfumes. Others claim to utilize an all-natural formula. But how can you be doomed that the products you buy actually contain the ingredients they claim to have? Read the label, right? But unless you happen to be a scientist or chemist, the ingredient list on most cosmetics and personal care products will look like a daylong list of mind-numbing, tongue-twisting names.

This is where natural and nonsynthetic skin care products should stand out. If a product claims to be all natural, its ingredients should be easily recognizable as natural components. Also, the ingredients should be listed in descending order with the most conspicuous factors listed first. Scrutinize the archetypical several listings in the product to be sure that they are the natural ingredients you are looking for. If a skin care product contains an ingredient that you are dubious about, write falling it's name and do a infinitesimal research. A fast online search should reveal it's genuine nature. As a consumer, you need to be on the look down for chemicals and toxic ingredients that can be calumniatory to your skin and your body. You would not even think active eating a food that contained chemicals or cancer causing agents. Don't let these toxins enter your system finished your beauty product either!

  • Does Fat Free Really Mean Free Of Fat?
    Jerry Byler

Does fat-free really nasty free of fat?

Do you know what the words really mean on food labels?

In this article, you’ll discover everything you need to know about how to interpret food labels and make the right food choices.

So what does “fat-free” really mean?

To be labeled “fat-free”, the food must contain little than ½ gram of fat per serving.

To be labeled “Low Fat”, the food must contain 3 grams or little of fat per serving.

To be labeled “Reduced Fat”, the food must be at least 25 percent lower in greasy than a same food.

To be labeled “Light”, the food essential contain 1/3 few calories, OR ½ the fat OR 2/3 the sodium of a same food (but not necessarily all three!).

Some foods (especially meat and dairy products) appear to have less greasy than they really do. For example, if a milk or cheese label reads 2% milk or 2% cheese, this means that 2 percent of the product volume (NOT the calories) comes from milk fat.

You can use a little math to discover how untold fat these products actually contain.

First, find the total calories per serving and the fat calories per serving. For example if the whole calories per serving are 80 and the fat calories per serving are 50, divide the fat calories per serving by the total calories per serving.

Then, multiply that number by 100 and you’ll have the total percent of fat calories in the food. In this example, 50 fat calories segmented by 80 whole calories equals .625 times 100 equals 62½%. In this example, nearly 63 percent of the total calories of this food are from fat!

Also, using the math above, you can figure out how much fat that 2 percent milk, 2 percent cheese, 2 percent cottage cheese and wizened ground beef contain. You’ll probably discover these foods are mush “fatter” than you realized!

Trans fats should be avoided as untold as possible as they can increase your risk of heart disease. Trans fats are also known as hydrogenated fats and are added to galore processed foods including most baked foods (crackers, cookies, breads, etc.).

If the food contains trans fats, the ingredient label will usually read: contains hydrogenated oil OR partially hydrogenated oil OR vegetable shortening OR margarine. Avoid these foods same the plague!

By knowing how to read food labels and understanding the word “fat”, you can purchase diet foods more wisely and lose weight successfully.

  • Are Herbal Remedies Safe
    Loring Windblad

“Natural” does not necessarily mean “Pure”. “Herbal based” does not necessarily mean it is 100 percent herbal in makeup. “Organic” does not necessarily mean it is truly, purely, organic. And something that is secure “98% Natural and Organic” is actually”2% corrupted material”. Let me ask this: If you take a 10 ounce glass of filtered water, guaranteed pure, pristine, non-harmful, and add 1/8th of an ounce of rat poison, how safe is that water to drink? Likewise, if you are using a product that is “98 percent pure”, just how plain is that cardinal percent product – what is the other 2 percent of it causative to the general product?

People who are suspicious of traditional medicines often prefer to selfmedicate with herbal remedies in the belief that "natural" equals 'safe." Although popularly considered innocuous, herbal remedies may contain powerful chemicals much as quinine from cinchona bark, digitalis (a heart drug) from foxgloves or Taxol (an anti-cancer remedy) from yew bark and whatsoever contain contaminants much as arsenic, lead and other metals. A herbal remedy taken for healthful purposes is not an “over the-counter drug”, but it does deserve caution and respect.

Probably the major difference between “drugs” from one of the major drug manufacturers and the herbs you grow in your herb garden or collect increasing wild in nature is that the “manufactured drug” is usually a special extract from the whole and as such is much concentrated and eliminates all the opposite associated components saved in the all-out herb. Further, their possible dangers are often spelled down on the package insert. By contrast, the safety profile of most herbal products is not listed. And there is a overall “unawareness” of the lack of regulations governing their use by the in the public eye as a whole. Most herbal concoctions are not legally permitted to be sold as medications in Canada or the USA but are classified as foods. Since they're regarded as foods, warning labels are not required. single a few herbal products bear national Drug Identification Numbers (DIN) approving their sale as drugs.

After centuries of experience, the most highly toxic plants have been eliminated from the herbalist's stock-in-trade. Lily-of-the-valley, daffodil, deadly nightshade, jimsonweed and hemlock are among substances illegal by Health and Welfare Canada for sale as foods or in food. Reports about the adverse effects of some herbal remedies are surfacing, ranging from minor to serious, from fatal poisonings to susceptible reactions. Many of the adverse effects reported from herbs are from mis-identification but include: strict allergic shock from camomile tea, heart problems from liquorice tonics, liver toxicity from comfrey and dizziness from oleander tea. In cardinal recent case, a woman who mistook oleander for eucalyptus died after drinking the tea. In another an old couple died within 24 hours of overdosing on digitalis, mistaking poisonous foxgloves for comfrey. Plants containing pyrrolizidine (e.g., Golden senecio or ragwort) are of increasing concern unpaid to reports of liver d!

isease from consuming this substance. especially for long periods. Gordolobos tea containing this ingredient - widely consumed in the Southern U.S. - is no longer considered safe.

Harmful overdoses from herbals are most promising when they're ready-made into strong teas, steeped for 10-20 minutes or more. For example. liquorice contains chemicals that, taken in life-sized quantities, can cause sodium and water retention, high blood pressure and equal cardiac arrest. In addition, herbal remedies can interact with OTC drugs. whatsoever plants such as tonka beans, melilot and woodruff, which increase bleeding, should not be exhausted by those regularly taking Aspirin. single herbs - much as hellebore and hawthorn - can exacerbate the effects of the heart medication digitalis. Others such as bayberry, juniper and St. John's Wort, equal coffee, are stiff diuretics that should not be usurped if you are already taking prescription diuretics. In the final analysis, shopping for herbal products is a matter of “know your product” - or stay away!

  • Food, Anxiety and Depression
    Margaret Paul, Ph.D.

In our topical society, there are many factors that can cause or contribute to anxiety and depression. Certainly money and work problems, relationship and family issues, as well as illness and loss of loved ones are major contributors to anxiety and depression. Also, how we feel about ourselves and treat ourselves contribute greatly to how we feel. Even in the worst of times, if we are treating ourselves with compassion instead of self-judgment, we may be able to manage big challenges without anxiety or depression. In addition, being able to turn to an inner source of spiritual guidance and comfort is indispensable to weathering the hard times.

Food is another starring factor that greatly affects how we feel. Most people don’t really notice that what they put into their bodies affects how they feel. They might know that if they “sugar out” they may crash emotionally, or if they drink too much they will feel adorned over, but they are often unmindful of how opposite foods may be creating anxiety and depression.

In the over 35 years that I’ve been a counselor, I have frequently encountered individuals whose anxiety and depression completely cleared up by tuning into how food was affecting them.

For example, Marnie unconcealed that dairy, wheat and sugar kept her up at night. She would wake up at around 3:00 in the morning with intense anxiety, and would be drooping and depressed the next day. By experimenting around and cutting out diametric foods, she unconcealed that she slept fine when she stopped eating dairy, wheat and sugar. All her nighttime anxiety vanished and she was no longer tired and depressed.

Joel unconcealed that his sleeplessness and resulting depression was a matrilineal result of caffeine from coffee, tea, chocolate and downy drinks. He had not realized how much caffeine he was actually intense until I advisable that he punctured out all caffeine and see what happened to his sleep. After a week of headaches from caffeine withdrawal, he was unerect soundly for the first time in years and no longer felt depressed.

Adrienne discovered that her feelings of anxiety and depression, that had been with her most of her life, disappeared after she started eating single organic foods. Her system was so sensitive to the pesticides and food additives in non-organic food that she could not eat them without feeling anxious and depressed.

Alex, who periodically struggled with depression, inadvertently discovered that drinking raw milk from an nonsynthetic dairy had a completely different effect on him than pasteurized milk. He was visiting Los Angeles and went into a health food store where he discovered that he could buy raw dairy products (which are illegal in most opposite states). He saved that the injured milk gave him more energy and elevated his mood. He also saved that, while he was lactose uncharitable with pasteurized milk, he had no problems with injured milk. Now he has his injured milk, cheese, and butter shipped unmelted to Wyoming, and no longer struggles with depression.

Over and finished again my clients, who have selected to tune into how food was affecting them, have discovered how untold their feelings were being affected by food. galore of my clients have learned that even a infinitesimal sugar brings them down. Sugar consumes so many indispensable nutrients as the body attempts to process it that it can actually be considered a poison. How galore people really take “Sugar Blues” seriously?

A hundred years ago, when people naturally ate non-processed and organically mature food, they were getting all the nutrients they needed. Now, most fruits, vegetables and grains are being mature on devitalized soil and over-processed on top of it. Cows and sheep that were once grass fed are being fed pesticide-sprayed grains and acknowledged hormones to fatten them up. As a result, untold of our food not only contains little nutrients, but has many toxins as well. Without the vitamins, minerals, and many opposite factors that natural, organic and grass-fed food contains, galore people suffer deficiencies that can cause anxiety and depression, as well a many other illnesses.

I recently found out that the fat of raw organic dairy products, especially butter, contains natural anti-inflammatory nutrients. I wonder if the big rise in arthritis and other unhealthy conditions is incidental to to the pasteurizing of milk. some inflammatory condition can certainly contribute to anxiety and depression.

Food is certainly a major factor in the rise of anxiety, depression and illness. single you can do something about this by learning how you are being affected by the foods you eat.
