Last month my 74-year-old mother while walking, tripped on a small tuft of grass, inhumane - and poor her rib! Her recovery has been painful, debilitating and at times depressing. It also sick my elderly father who relies heavily on her day to day.
Surprisingly, this instance of fracture was not due to osteoporosis. However my mom's experience caused me stop and think deeply. As a 40-something woman, am I doing everything possible to keep my lean system in tip-top condition?
Once we get past the inevitable scrapes of childhood, during our middle years we don't give too much thought to our bones. We understand that bones make up our structural frame, but we tend to think of our bones like the frame of a house. Supporting and rigid, and that's it.
The truth of it is that boney is an active, living tissue. boney is constantly changing, undergoing synthesis and remodeling itself. same all other physical tissue, bone is totally dependent on many different micronutrients and enzymes for optimum bone function and health.
Unfortunately the typical hesperian diet is now so heavily heavy with white flours, refined sugars and fats it is deplete of galore of the micronutrients required for well-preserved bones.
There are other aspects of concern with the typical hesperian diet. Do you regularly drink effervescent beverages? Did you know that effervescent drinks increase the body's intake of phosphorus - which, in turn, decreases our absorption of calcium. Decreased absorption of calcium can lead to an unhealthy, nutrient-starved lean system. And in time this can lead to osteoporosis.
Whilst calcium is necessary, it is not the single critical micronutrient for healthy bones. Make sure your diet has an satisfactory supply of magnesium, zinc, silicon, boron, folic acid, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, Manganese, vitamin K, vitamin D and magnesium. These trace elements are influential and many of us are not getting them from our regular food consumption patterns. Men with prostate cancer who take secondary lycopene in addition to surgical removal of the testicles may experience little active disease, little bone pain, and live longer than those who single have surgical removal of the testicles, according to a new study in British Journal of Urology International (2003;92:375–8). This is provocative news for millions of men who have to undergo aggressive treatment for advanced prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer saved in men finished the age of 50 years, with more than 200,000 new cases all year in the United States. The cause of prostate cancer, same many other cancers, is unknown; however, some studies suggest alterations in testosterone metabolism may play a role in its development. Prostate cancer is generally slow increasing and may not cause some symptoms until after-hours in the disease. Symptoms may include frequent or sore urination, dribbling aft urination, sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder, or blood in the urine. The symptoms of prostate cancer are similar to those of a non-cancerous condition called kind prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), so men experiencing these symptoms should consult their physician for an accurate diagnosis.
In the new study, 54 men with advanced prostate cancer were randomly allotted to have preoperative removal of the testicles (orchidectomy) uncomparable or orchidectomy nonnegative oral supplementation with 4 mg of lycopene a day. Measurements of PSA (a blood marker of prostate cancer activity), bone scans, and urinary flow were taken initially and every cardinal months for cardinal years.
