How Stressed-Out Are YOU?

Dr. David L. Thomas Are you feeling stressed out? Too many things to do, too infinitesimal time? cardinal more thing added to the To-Do list and you feel like you’ll explode? Whoa there, no exploding allowed! You can handle it—just listen in. Listen? To what? To your self-talk. Not yourself talk, but your SELF-TALK. Listen in to the demands you’re making of your time, but more importantly listen in to how you’re saying them and what you’re saying. Many of us don’t pay particular attention to what we’re saying to ourselves. We’ve never been taught the importance of how harmful it can be to us nor have we been shown that we can use it to feel untold better. You can literally un-stress yourself by using your own self-talk. Listen in for –need-, have-to, must, type statements that you make to yourself. “First I need to drop the kids off, then I have-to go to the grocery store, then I need to stop at the bank, past I have-to get home and work on those taxes before having to go back down and pick up the kids.” You’ve retributory created a lot of demands on yourself. And yes, in order for your life to continue same you want, you would prefer to do all those things exactly as you have envisioned. But you don’t NEED to, HAVE-TO or MUST. By using demanding statements on yourself, you open up a lot of opportunities to say incoherent things to yourself that create stress. When you use hard statements, you past create a scenario of “what-if” in your head. And when the “what-if’s” back-up, past watch out stress level! “What if I don’t get it done, what if I don’t get there in time to get the kids, what if this, what if that.” This is when you really go into stress mode! Asking such open-ended questions is the origin much of your stress. You often answer with “that would be awful, that would be terrible” which compounds the stressful feelings even more. Since awful and alarming are labels way beyond bad, (actually labels that are beyond definition) you’ve created a situation in your head that ends up with you saying to yourself “…and I couldn’t stand it if that happened,” or “…I couldn’t stand feeling that way!” It’s indeed a vicious cycle of thinking that is common to all of us. Fortunately, once you know how, you can think your way out of these situations as quickly as you got in. So where do you start? First, flag much have-to, must, need-to statements in your head. Then replace the needs, musts and have-tos with preferences, desires, and wants. Then when something doesn’t go reported to your desires, reduce the awfuls and terribles to simply, bad. Then rest-assure yourself that you can stand it. What if you don’t make it to the bank? What if you’re late picking up the kids?? Well, it’s not what you wanted, it may indeed even have consequences which may be bad, but in the overall scheme of things it isn’t awful and you CAN stand it. A great deal of stress is caused from within by this “I-can’t-stand-it-it is.” Remember: whenever you hear yourself saying “need-to, have-to, got-to, etc” replace it with want-to or would like to. secondary needs with desires; musts with preferences. And remind yourself that awful things will not happen if your desires are not met. You may not same the results if things don’t go your way, but you can indeed stand the feelings. It may not be good if things don’t fall into place same you want, but the world will continue to spin and you will be able to handle it. It takes some practice. Don’t expect it to happen for you like magic. Pay attention to your self-talk, listen for the what-if statements, flag the essential and need statements. Dispute them with wants and desires. Do it vigorously. With time it will become second nature, and you’ll notice the lack of stress in your life. Dr. David L. Thomas, LMHC About The Author

Breaking the Breakfast Barrier

Philip J. Goscienski, M.D. Why was breakfast fun when you were a kid? Because Mom made it, it was probably sugary, and you didn’t have to do the dishes! Now you’re the complete show, maybe for the rest of the family, and there’s just never enough time in the morning to get the kids to school and for you to get what most nutritionists have pegged as the most important meal of the day. You know that sugar coating is not good, that persons who eat breakfast have an easier time maintaining their weight than those who don’t, and a news report just informed you that breakfast-skippers don’t perform as healed at school or on the job. What a dilemma! Can you make a breakfast that’s convenient, quick and healthy? Sure, and here are a couple of examples. The ordinal Slammer. Atkins it’s not, but it’s quick, healthy and tasty. A cool cereal is standing at the best of the list for most Americans, but without sugar it usually tastes like wet cardboard. It takes literally about 30 seconds (I timed it) to slice fractional a banana or a couple of strawberries, or dump some blueberries or raspberries in the bowl before adding milk. If you can’t take dairy products because of lactose intolerance, the latest soy milks, with their subtle-not-sweet flavors give you even better nutrition. Sweet, tropical and Easy. flawless for cold mornings: oatmeal and spice. Not the separate packets, which have way too galore calories, but stock (not instant) oatmeal. Pop it in the microwave with a little fat-free milk, soy milk or other secondary (easy on the non-dairy coffee creamers with their load of trans fat) for about cardinal minute and 45 seconds. Then sprinkle some cinnamon and a few raisins over the top. (Recent studies suggest that about ½ teaspoon of cinnamon per day can help to lower cholesterol levels, and might also reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.) Ignore the longer microwave cooking directions on the box; overheating spoils the flavor. If you can spare other 30 seconds, try the fruit here, too. High-Tech Omelette. Non-stick fry pans, egg substitutes and frozen veggies make it a breeze to have a filling, wholesome breakfast with no fuss and negligible cleanup. Preheat the pan and pour in the Eggbeaters or something similar. (These are not artificial eggs, they’re egg whites with a little coloring, vegetable oils, tofu, etc.) If you think of it the night before, pour some unmelted stir-fry vegetables into a measuring cup (1/2 cup per serving) and let it thaw in the refrigerator. That helps it to cook a infinitesimal faster in the morning. Besides stir-fry vegetables there are plenty of opposite choices in the frozen foods section. When the eggs are partly cooked, toss in the veggies. Anything that needs cleaning up can go into the dishwasher and you and the kids can be on your way. Breakfast Au Natural. The ultimate in speed and convenience, but which will promising keep hunger absent until lunchtime, it’s nothing more than a few ounces of yogurt to which you add two handfuls of trail mix. The latter will cover the blandness of the yogurt, but choose it carefully. Skip the ones with chocolate chips! About The Author

Eating Healthy in a Time-Starved World

Protica Nutritional Research Americans are literally running out of time. Achieving a work-life balance, which is still a luxury for tens of millions of working parents, has been overtaken by an even greater demand: a work-life-nutrition balance. Unfortunately, this increasing demand for nutrition has not been accompanied by a useful strategy that enables people to reclaim time from their troubled lives. The result of this dilemma has been an additional layer of stress practical on top of an already disagreeable life. This has further highlighted stress as America’s best health problem something that was archetypical brought to in the public eye attention in the early 1980s, and has since much obvious in the 2 decades since then[i]. Once the link between time mismanagement and stress is ready-made – and it is virtually obvious at this point that this link exists[ii] -- a range of unfavorable health and nutrition consequences often result. The vicious cycle that ensues is harrowing and celebrated to most people through direct experience, or via painfully seeing it obvious in the life of a family member, friend, or colleague. Stress can -- and often does -- lead to unhealthy eating[iii], which in turn, leads to equal more stress because the body is not receiving the essential micronutrients and vitamins that it requires. While this is happening, since poor eating is often associated with undesirable weight gain, another level of psychological stress – this one related with body image problems – is unleashed. Although if the cycle ended here this would be sufficient to solidify this as a starring problem, it continues beyond this point and becomes worse. This mental stress due to body image problems/weight gain often leads to “emotional eating”. It is estimated that 75% of all overeating is the result of emotional eating[iv]. This, in turn, leads to yet much nutritional deficiency, since the emotional eating is typically of unhealthy comfort foods that are fruitful in saturated fat. This – as can be inferred -- leads to yet more stress, and the cycle continues, unabated, often resulting in malnutrition, obesity, and in more cases than most average people realize, even suicide. The almost clinical description of this negative cycle in the previous paragraphs does not remotely capture the indescribable pain and suffering that tens of millions of Americans experience all day due to the collision of stress, lack of time, and bad eating habits. While no description could accurately capture the devastation that this negative loop causes, it is sufficient in the context of this article to firmly declare that it is a profoundly prodigious crisis. No quick-fix solution to a problem of this magnitude is possible, and some attempt for an overnight solution should be met with the most assertive skepticism. The important to addressing a situation of this immense complexity is to identify the root cause, and then provide remedies that mitigate or in some cases, avoid the unfavourable loop from opening in the archetypical place. One of the root causes of this problem has been known already: a lack of time. If more Americans had more time, or felt that they had more time, the stress related with not having enough time would not be competent to pull them under and into a negative nutrition spiral. Therefore, a solution that works on this equal – the equal of time – is going to be help solve this problem to some extent. It is within this awareness that time is of the essence that a number of nutritional supplements have been created. Unfortunately, while many of these supplements take mere seconds to ingest, an array of them are not providing the body’s requirement for micronutrients and vitamins. Furthermore, and quite irresponsibly, galore so-called “energy bars” are very higher in calories and carbohydrates, and as such can lead to emotional eating and trigger weight gain. It is even more hapless than this to observe that the race to market many nutritional supplement products has been more about making money through artful advertising and slogans, than it has been about helping people save time, eat healthy, and avoid potentially life-altering negative stress cycles. This is proved by the number of so-called nutritional supplements that are little more than expensive and tasteless candy bars. However, there are whatsoever products that have risen to this ethical challenge – products that have been truly glorious by actual nutritional scientists who see a dire need in society, and have engineered a useful product to help meet that need. The easiest way to identify such products is to find those that deliver a complete, self-balancing source of nutrition for time-starved individuals, including: adults, kids, athletes, sedentary individuals, and all those in between. At the same time, these elite products should provide a range of unexpendable nutrients so that, in effect, the nutrition source can be relied upon as a all-out meal when time is severely limited. Solving America’s time-starved dilemma is big than any cardinal product, or series of products, to solve. However, though the perfect solution to this involved problem remains elusive, it is broad that part of that eventual solution will depend on resolving causes, and not chasing symptoms. Nutritional products that offer scientifically formulated meal and supplement solutions will be a major ally in this resolution. References [i] Source: “America’s #1 Health Problem”. Stress.org.
