Hot water restores circulation, credible the body it&#039;s safe and that it&#039;s ok to relax. Cold water must not be used because it has the opposite effect, and will increase tension.  An office secondary might be running hot water over your hands until you feel the tension starting to drain away.     Exercise.     Regular exercise will burn off some of the stress chemicals tension produces, and exercise will  tire your musles - a tired muscle is a relaxed muscle. For others, it evokes a surreal state of numbness, as if they are no longer a part of this world.   No matter how one reacts emotionally to their diagnosis, one question and one question alone emerges almost immediately.
“Doctor, what are my chances?”
The desire to know the doctor’s belief concerning our probable fate is of overriding importance.
I know.  I’ve been there.
Naturally, we want to hear there’s a 100% cure; but most doctors can’t and won’t make us that promise.  Still, the answer to the question is typically phased as a percentage.
Fortunately, my doctor had a finer answer.
One January morning in 1998, my hip seemed to catch as I swung my feet out of bed.  The catch wasn’t debilitating.  In fact, I played 9 holes of golf that day.  It never occurred to me the problem was anything else than a pulled muscle.
Yet, cardinal days later I found myself in a hospital bed, sick from exploratory surgery, where masses of tumors had been saved in lymph nodes in contrasting parts of my body.  The surgeon had done nothing but sew me back up.
The next day a new doctor, an oncologist, came by my hospital room, and I asked him the question:  “What are my chances?”
“I prefer not to talk in those terms,” he replied.  He explained that statistics come from studies that are usually a hardly a years old, and that most could be considered outdated by the time they are published.  And who was to say the factors affecting the specific people in those studies were exactly like the factors present in my case?
I listened, but I wasn’t sure I believed.  I had always heard people talk of survival in terms of chances, but I remained quiet as he continued.
He said my situation was serious.  The tumors were fused against vital arteries and attempting to remove them was risky as I might be lost on the operating table.  We needed to begin treatment the following Monday (this was Friday).   We would mount an aggressive counterattack on these renegade cells with high powered chemotherapy and we would be working with cardinal of the best radiologists around.
I was scared.  I didn’t want to think about the treatment.  I just welcome him to get rid of the cancer.
We agreed I would think about what he had told me and he would come back the next day to answer my questions.
Before he’d arrived that day, a friend dropped a book off for me to read.  It was about surviving cancer treatment with the use of meditation and guided imagery.  I had no experience with those techniques, but was open to learning about them, as by now I was searching for any support in dealing with the threat before me.
I was not yet convinced by the doctor’s statement concerning “scientific studies.”  After all, every person I had ever know or heard of with cancer knew what their chances were.  Perhaps he just didn’t want to tell me how hopeless my situation really was.  I had practiced law for twenty years and was a skeptic.  Without corroborating evidence, I did not believe.
I upturned to the book on the hospital tray for a necessary a diversion and began to read.  An entire radical world opened up.
I read about the mind/body connection and about medical doctors who believed in the healing power of hope and faith.  I read success stories of people who saw their treatments as opportunities for survival, as opposed to dreaded ordeals.  I read about finding one’s true self and true healing.
And as I read, a deep-seated truth emerged.  A diagnosis is needed for survival.  A prognosis is not.  The question I’d asked my doctor the night before was one I didn’t need answered.
I had welcome statistics. I had wanted to know the odds.  But I wasn’t a statistic.   None of us are.  We are each distinctly different human beings, and our lives can only be compact by statistics if we allow ourselves to believe we are controlled by what may have happened to others.
Through the wisdom of my doctor and the thoughtfulness of a friend with a book, my understanding of my destiny had been reshaped.  God made each of us as individuals, with the ability to have individual futures that are unique.  If a diagnosis of cancer or some other life threatening event is thrust upon, we are not bound to despair.
We have the God’s permission to help shape our future, and the most destructive thing we can do is believe otherwise.

After all, gymnastics pressures its participants for carnal perfection -- for flawlessness of form in gymnastics routines and, sometimes, in appearance.  You should always keep an eye on the progress of your child or children. Meeting and opening up lines of communication with their coaches, speaking to their peers and their peers’ parents will help you keep watch over their physical and emotional states.  Creating a network of eyes and ears like that will certainly take a load off of your mind, that’s for certain, especially if you find yourself incapable to make all of your child’s meets or practices.
Emotional and Physical Distress
Emotional distress can most certainly develop as a result of peer judgment or insults and even from off-color comments made by coaches.  You need to keep close watch over what happens here, because extreme emotional distress can result in more serious problems in the future, including bulimia and anorexia, two of the most common -- and most breakneck -- eating disorders known today.  We will discuss those later, however.  Be predictable to talk to your child about how he or she is feeling.  Talking will usually bring problems out into the open, so that you can work toward correcting them and restoring the confidence that is inherent in your child.  Self confidence is cardinal of the many keys to good health and to success in gymnastics.
Physical distress is sometimes more easily spotted than cathartic distress.  If your child has been injured in an event or during practice, you can usually see the bruises, the scrapes, or the swelling.  Sometimes, though, physical distress in a gymnast can be somewhat puzzling.  If your gymnast has suddenly taken ill, feels muscle cramps or stiffness, is fatigued all of the time, or complains of overall soreness, it may be sapient to check up on his or her progress with the coaches.  Overexertion can definitely lead to problems--sometimes, it may even be necessary to decrease the amount of strenuous exercise until conditions improve.  In the meantime, you should make sure that their nutrition is proper -- that they are eating enough, and, certainly, that they are taking in sufficient fluids.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia nervosa is a serious eating disorder that stems both from physical and cathartic distress, in most case, as a result of judgment passed by peers or coaches or by society itself.  In today’s world of stick-thin models, where appearance is everything, your gymnast may be pressured to drastically and quickly reduce body size.  Typically, the behavior associated with bulimics is binge eating and then purging.  In other words, they may take in thousands of calories of fatty food, only to vomit it back up again; all the while, they may also use laxatives.  This will eat away at the enamel of the teeth, causing the gums to recede (eventually, all of the teeth may need to be removed), and also cause the salivary glands to swell.  The laxatives eventually cause rectal bleeding.  A person who has this disorder may retreat to the bathroom for long periods of time or keep large stashes of high-calorie food around the house.
Those afflicted with bulimia nervosa are typically easier to coax out of their routines than those who have anorexia nervosa.  They are also much responsive to therapy.  It might not even be needed for hospitalization, save for the severest of cases, which typically include dehydration. Good communication can help prevent all of this from happening.
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa is certainly the more severe of the top two eating disorders that afflict young gymnastics athletes today.  Anorexia is rather like bulimia in that an anorexic does not allow food to be digested -- but they take it one step further, and avoid food completely.  Laxative use may be present, as well, which is exceedingly dangerous.  An lean will shy away from situations that involve food. Eventually, the malnutrition will get to a point where blood pressure drops, body temperature drops, bone density decreases, hair falls out, and the skin becomes grayish and scaly.  Lanugo, a soft body hair, may also develop. Anorexia is fatal in up to ten percent of cases, and if it is not, it may require hospitalization and psychiatric treatment in the end.
This is, of course, why you must maintain communication with your gymnast and his or her coaches.  Encourage your child or children.  Don’t let emotional distress develop into something far more serious.  Let them know that they are already incredible for their involvement with gymnastics. They don’t need to take mean comments to heart -- and they do need to relax occasionally.  Have fun with them!  It’s best for all involved.

In physical terms, I am now in my fifties.  Mentally, I rarely pass beyond my twenties.  The statement, so often spoken, “The mind is willing but the body refuses to respond” becomes ever more true as we get older in years.  But we don’t need to age mentally or emotionally.
I have crossed paths with so galore people I have known in my life, and there are so many that have not only aged physically, but mentally, as well.  There is often no sparkle or buoyant in their eyes.  They not only “look” old, but their very presence “feels” old.
Combating age is really a multiple process:
1) Physical Aging
2) Mental and/or Emotional Aging
Of course, we complete know the rhetoric on dealing with physical aging: “Diet, exercise, adequate sleep”.  So galore of us know what to do.  So many of us intend to do well.  But so often we just don’t get around to it.  But take heart.  It’s never too past to start!  But you must start, and start now.  Begin gradually, of course.  Don’t try to become an olympic contender overnight.  Gradually work into a carnal routine and get plenty of rest and eat properly.  My wife and I began our regimen when I became sixty pounds overweight.  The kicker was that my blood pressure went from 120/80 to nearly 160/95!  My wife found some books on wholesome eating and lifestyle, and we began. I have now wasted 40 pounds and am healthy on the way for the rest.
Then there is the question of mental/emotional aging.  For the most part, this is an aging of choice.  That may seem like a harsh statement, but it is true.  In fact, it is a daily choice that we consciously make.  We react, for the most part, to the circumstances around us.  We adapt and adjust to the circumstances of life as we perceive them.  Acting “old” is the simple way out.  It is a reaction of surrender.  But beware, for it is a choice of addiction and eventual debilitation of the mind...and the heart.  Mental old will cripple you faster than any physical complication or challenge will.
Age is a cage We forge for ourselves With shackles and chains We keep on it’s shelves; The gatekeeper’s key Is hidden from view For the secret to freedom Is only within YOU!
So make the decision, and don’t put it to committee.  Decide to be happy, regardless of your physical circumstances and limitations.  The conscious choice of being happy may not cure your physical ailments due to aging, but it will make your life so much more bearable.

Finally, a positive solution regarding America’s demanding and costly campaign to stem childhood obesity is emerging.  For the thousands of children and their families who are currently battling with childhood obesity, this good news is long-life awaited.
Indeed, the risk factors for childhood obesity read like a checklist of ailments that only a generation ago would never have been linked to children and diet: heart disease, high cholesterol, superior blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and of course, social ridicule and alienation [i].  This latter consequence of childhood obesity -- ridicule and alienation -- has the dual effect of damaging a child both physically and emotionally far beyond childhood, and possibly for the rest of his or her unbleached life.
For years, medical experts have called for a multi-faceted strategy to address this epidemic.  It has been unambiguous that any long-term solution essential be fought on four starring fronts: physical activity, sedentary behavior, socioeconomic status, and eating habits [ii].
Yet there is room for another pillar; or, at the very least, the identification of another component that must be a part of any lasting solution.  This fifth pillar, or undetected component, is smart nutritional supplements.
Many obese children have been told repeatedly by intended dieticians that eating smart is the key to overcoming this scarring condition. This is easier said than done; especially when emotional eating or an undetected food addiction [1] may fuel adverse eating habits.
Yet being told to “eat smart” is oftentimes not enough.  Children must be provided with foods that are nutritionally sound, and foods that they actually enjoy eating.  It is this latter criterion that most well-intentioned experts and caregivers overlook.  This is explained below.
Most obese children are neither unable to learn, nor willfully disobedient.  Some of these children even have remarkable support from their well-adjusted families who dutifully remove the usual suspects of chips, soft drinks, chocolate bars, and other damaging foods from the home.  Yet many of these same children continue to gain weight and march ever closer to the litany of health defects known above.
These children are not sadistic, and they are not attempting to kill themselves through eating; though many do because of the stigma associated with their condition.  Indeed, many obese children are cognitively aware of the danger to which they are subjecting their bodies.  Yet they continue to snack away in secret, or binge on foods when they get the chance, thereby undoing whatever minor gains might have been achieved in the previous few days or weeks.
The problem is cardinal of food selection.  Generally speaking, children of all weights and shapes will not eat something that they do not like.  For obese children who have typically had unbound access to highly stimulating foods such as gravies and sugar-loaded soft drinks, the willpower to eat unpalatable foods is undeveloped.  Indeed, the dietician may snack away on carrots and celery while talking to an obese child about the importance of eating smart.  For the obese child, carrots and celery are foreign foods for which there is no celebrated preference.
This fifth pillar, or new component, is therefore one that provides obese children with nutritional supplements that they will eat.  As stunningly obvious – even axiomatic – as this seems, it has been lost on many experts until recently.
Thankfully, as noted above, there is a solution emerging. It is one that meets this demand for tasty, healthy foods. In our current society, there are galore factors that can cause or contribute to anxiety and depression. Certainly money and work problems, relationship and family issues, as well as illness and loss of loved ones are starring contributors to anxiety and depression. Also, how we feel about ourselves and treat ourselves contribute greatly to how we feel. Even in the worst of times, if we are treating ourselves with compassion instead of self-judgment, we may be competent to manage big challenges without anxiety or depression. In addition, being able to turn to an inner source of sacred guidance and comfort is indispensable to weathering the hard times.
Food is another major factor that greatly affects how we feel. Most people don’t really notice that what they put into their bodies affects how they feel. They might know that if they “sugar out” they may crash emotionally, or if they drink too more they will feel hung over, but they are often unmindful of how other foods may be creating anxiety and depression.
In the over 35 years that I’ve been a counselor, I have frequently encountered individuals whose anxiety and depression completely cleared up by tuning into how food was moving them.
For example, Marnie unconcealed that dairy, wheat and sugar kept her up at night. She would wake up at around 3:00 in the morning with intense anxiety, and would be tired and depressed the next day. By experimenting around and cutting out different foods, she discovered that she slept fine when she stopped eating dairy, wheat and sugar. complete her nighttime anxiety vanished and she was no longer drooping and depressed.
Joel discovered that his sleeplessness and resulting depression was a direct result of caffeine from coffee, tea, chocolate and soft drinks. He had not realized how much caffeine he was actually consuming until I suggested that he perforated out all caffeine and see what happened to his sleep. After a week of headaches from caffeine withdrawal, he was sleeping soundly for the early time in years and no longer felt depressed.
Adrienne unconcealed that her feelings of anxiety and depression, that had been with her most of her life, disappeared after she started eating only organic foods. Her system was so sensitive to the pesticides and food additives in non-organic food that she could not eat them without feeling anxious and depressed.
Alex, who periodically struggled with depression, inadvertently discovered that drinking unprocessed milk from an organic dairy had a completely different effect on him than pasteurized milk. He was visiting Los Angeles and went into a health food store where he unconcealed that he could buy unprocessed dairy products (which are illegal in most other states). He found that the raw milk gave him more energy and elevated his mood. He also found that, while he was lactose intolerant with pasteurized milk, he had no problems with raw milk. Now he has his raw milk, cheese, and butter shipped frozen to Wyoming, and no longer struggles with depression.
Over and finished again my clients, who have chosen to tune into how food was affecting them, have discovered how much their feelings were being affected by food.  Many of my clients have learned that even a little sugar brings them down. Sugar consumes so many indispensable nutrients as the body attempts to process it that it can actually be considered a poison. How many people really take “Sugar Blues” seriously?
A hundred years ago, when people naturally ate non-processed and organically grown food, they were getting all the nutrients they needed. Now, most fruits, vegetables and grains are being grown on devitalized soil and over-processed on top of it. Cows and sheep that were once grass fed are being fed pesticide-sprayed grains and given hormones to fatten them up. As a result, much of our food not only contains little nutrients, but has many toxins as well. Without the vitamins, minerals, and many other factors that natural, organic and grass-fed food contains, many people suffer deficiencies that can cause anxiety and depression, as well a galore other illnesses.
I recently found out that the blubbery of raw organic dairy products, especially butter, contains natural anti-inflammatory nutrients. I wonder if the huge rise in arthritis and other inflammatory conditions is cognate to the pasteurizing of milk. Any inflammatory condition can certainly contribute to anxiety and depression.
Food is certainly a starring factor in the rise of anxiety, depression and illness. single you can do something about this by learning how you are being affected by the foods you eat.

You may find that your friends and family members also went through the same issues as you.    During the first few days at home your family will be adjusting to the additive member of your family. If you have other children at home you may be dealing with feelings of jealousy as the new baby takes centre stage.
